Panthers rookie running back Christian McCaffrey had a front row seat to just how disruptive the Eagles’ defense can be, in a Week 6 28-23 Eagles victory at Bank of America Stadium, and a taste of what the New England Patriots running backs will be up against Sunday in Super Bowl LII.

McCaffrey is part of a new wave of dual-threat running backs who are equally adept at catching the ball and making plays out of the backfield, as he is as a ball-carrier and finished the season with 435 rushing yards and two touchdowns while adding 80 receptions for 651 yards and five more scores.

The Eagles, though, held McCaffrey to eight rushing yards but he caught 10 passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Eagles OL motivated to win a ring for Jason Peters. Four-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots love throwing the ball to running backs Dion Lewis and James White out of the backfield, but McCaffrey thinks this could be a tough matchup for the AFC Champions.

“The Eagles defense just plays so well together,” McCaffrey told NJ Advance Media Friday on Radio Row at the Mall of America. “That I think they’re disciplined and that’s why it’s going to be such a great game. The Eagles defense just has so much talent all over the place. If they can stay disciplined, I think it will be a great game.”

The Eagles’ defense finished the regular season with the league’s premier rushing defense and No. 4 unit overall, and McCaffrey says that he wasn’t surprised to see their production this season.

Dhani Jones on Eagles for Super Bowl 2018, “I think obviously, they’re talented all over the place,” McCaffrey said. “But the biggest thing is they play so well together. And their wholesale jerseys are both sale great. They thrive off momentum. When they get turnovers, they keep coming with them. They’re a very great defense with a great front. Obviously, Fletcher Cox in the middle and guys like that. Jenkins out back, that gives them two very perennial leaders. They’re definitely tough to play against.”

Even though Eagles running back Jay Ajayi was averaging 6.3 yards per carry in the first half of Saturday’s 15-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, he disappeared for a substantial stretch in the second quarter.

After a one-yard gain on first and 10 from the Falcons’ 31-yard line with 13:29 remaining in the second quarter, Ajayi didn’t touch the ball again until the Eagles’ first snap of the third quarter, when he was stuffed for a 2-yard loss.

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson insisted again Monday that Ajayi’s absence was a product of the game plan.

“I ultimately control the personnel,” Pederson said Monday. “[Running backs coach] Duce Staley doesn’t call any plays. I call on different guys in particular situations. A couple of times you come off a long run, or a big pass, it can be a good time to go a little [up]tempo. In that case, whoever is the back at the time, we just keep him on the field.

“At that point, [LeGarrette Blount] was heating up a little bit. We wanted to get him going, too. It’s just the way it goes.”

There is evidence to support an uptempo attack: On a 74-yard third quarter drive, quarterback Nick Foles seemed in command of the offense while playing with confidence.

However, the offense was stopped for minus-five yards rushing while Ajayi was on the bench.

Despite the struggles in Ajayi’s absence, Pederson doesn’t sound like he will deviate his running back rotation in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Zach Ertz needs to be Eagles’ X-factor vs. Vikings

“Every back knows the running game,” Pederson said. “They know the passing game. The way it is set up is by design, by scheme-design, a particular back might be good in a particular run-scheme, so we put that back in on certain plays. However, if we break off a long pass or a run, there is a chance that I’ll go hurry uptempo, which is why they have to know the full complement of the offense.”

Jay Ajayi wasn’t hurt Saturday night. So why did he barely play after a huge first quarter?

Ajayi dominated the first quarter of the Eagles’ 15-10 playoff win over the Falcons at the Linc with seven carries for 49 yards. But after a one-yard carry a minute into the second quarter, he didn’t touch the ball again until the third quarter.

After his hot start, he didn’t even get on the field on the Eagles’ last two drives of the first half.
wholesale jerseys online
LeGarrette Blount actually had more carries than Ajayi after the first quarter, but netted only 19 yards on nine attempts, although he did score the Eagles’ only touchdown from a yard out in the second quarter.

Ajayi never got into a rhythm after his long layoff. He had eight carries for five yards after the first quarter and finished with 15 carries for 54 yards along with four catches for 44 yards, including a 32-yard catch and run that was the Eagles’ longest offensive play of the game.

Head coach Doug Pederson said Monday he just wanted to get Blount some work. He also said he likes to go hurry-up after long plays and was unable to sub Ajayi while the offense was going with tempo. But there weren’t any plays longer than 15 yards while Ajayi sat.

Pederson said the decision on which back to use rests with him and not running backs coach Duce Staley.

“I ultimately control the personnel,” he said. “Duce doesn’t sub them. I’m the one calling the plays, so I call for those guys in particular situations, and a couple times when we broke off a long run or a pass particularly – it’s a good time to go a little tempo. So whoever the back is at the time on the field, I just kept him in there.

“And [Blount] was heating up a little bit and we wanted to get him going as well and it’s just the way it went.”

Ajayi had 35 of the 86 net yards on the Eagles’ only touchdown drive of the game.

After that second-quarter TD drive, the Eagles ran 15 times for 17 yards, not including three Nick Foles kneel-downs.

Pederson said all the backs know all the plays, but he just prefers different backs depending on what the Eagles are doing offensively.

Of the Eagles’ 67 offensive plays, Ajayi played 29, Blount 20, Corey Clement 16 and Kenjon Barner one (see Snap Counts).

“The way it is set up is by design, by scheme design, a particular back might be good at a certain run scheme so we put that back in for that particular play,” he said.

Matt Nagy? Is that pronounced Naggy? Are we sure on that? Not Naygee or Noggee? Maybe if Bears fans had heard more about him in the run-up to his hiring as head coach, they’d know for sure.

Guess they can just call him Coach Matt for now. There’s plenty of time between now and the first opportunity to second-guess him to get that worked out.

The 39-year-old Nagy was hired Monday as the Bears’ new wholesale nfl jerseys coach, the 16th in team history, replacing John Fox. Born in Plainfield, N.J., Nagy grew up in Lancaster, Pa., and quarterbacked his Manheim Central High School team to back-to-back state finals in the mid-1990s. He went on to become a record-setting quarterback at the University of Delaware and played six years in the Arena Football League. Most recently, he was an assistant under highly regarded coach Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chicagoans love nothing more than to rally around a Bears coach. If, unlike his crotchety predecessor, he has a reasonably engaging public persona, comes across as candid and genuine and, of course, wins more often than not, Coach Matt will be a household name soon enough.

It’s not as though Nagy is a complete unknown or was ignored in coverage of coach casting. Nagy was reported to be in the mix to potentially replace Fox as far back as a month ago, when many in the media still hedged on the inevitability of Fox’s dismissal.

NFL Network reported Tuesday that the Bears had requested the Chiefs’ permission to talk with him, which they did over the weekend. Nagy’s run as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator ended when the defense failed to hold a 21-3 halftime lead Saturday against the Titans to get bounced from the playoffs.

Given the sheer volume of reporting, analysis and commentary devoted to how the Bears would fill their coaching vacancy, however, fans shouldn’t have been as surprised by his hiring as they seemed to be.

cheap china jerseys nfl best

Nagy seemed just another name as the Patriots’ Josh McDaniels, the Vikings’ Pat Shurmur and the Eagles’ John DeFilippo, along with Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, dominated chatter.

Nagy’s credentials were solid, and his story — that of a guy who eight years ago gave up a secure job in real estate for a chance to remain in football — had its own pull. But he wasn’t cast as a consensus front-runner by any means.
plain football jerseys wholesale
Even Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, whom no one actually expected to entertain the Bears opening, probably had his name come up more often, if only because people enjoyed the fantasy.

As so often happens in coverage from Halas Hall, where the franchise has become better known for being opaque than its T formation, it was hard to know what exactly the brain trust was thinking and harder still to know what it would do.

That fuzziness has only been compounded by the fact Bears general manager Ryan Pace is still establishing a predictive track record. He remains hard to chart.

It’s the same dilemma that had most analysts as blindsided as newly signed quarterback Mike Glennon last April when the Bears drafted quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

The need to help Trubisky develop and for the Bears to tailor their game plan to him correctly pointed observers toward coaches with offensive backgrounds.

Trubisky, though, is far from the only thing Nagy needs to develop in his new job.

Nagy, who doesn’t have to be Mike Ditka but better not be Marc Trestman or John Fox, needs to help reinvigorate a fan base that still watches games on TV but eats pricey tickets rather than show up at Soldier Field.

These are die-hards who have grown weary of a head coach unwilling or unable to explain to fans what’s really going on.

Chicagoans no doubt would celebrate a confident, competent, personable Bears coach capable of making the winters a little more tolerable and the football seasons extend to February.

Some football smarts and energy, along with his background in sales, would give Coach Matt a pronounced edge in making a name for himself locally.

If he wins, of course.

Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram have been harassing quarterbacks all season, and Sunday they will get to work for the second time this season at MetLife Stadium.

The last time they were here, the Los Angeles Chargers sacked Eli Manning five times en route to the team’s first win of the season, a 27-22 Week 5 victory over the New York Giants.

Bosa has 11.5 sacks this season and Ingram has 10 sacks. They are the first pair of Chargers teammates with at least 10 sacks in the same season since Shawne Merriman (17.5) and Shaun Phillips (11.5) in 2006.

Bosa and Ingram hope to have a similar effect on quarterback Bryce Petty, who’s making his second start of the season when the Chargers take on the New York Jets on Sunday.

Petty has played in eight career games with five starts, posting a 1-4 record with four touchdowns and nine interceptions.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Petty’s 20.5 Total QBR is the second lowest of any quarterback with at least 100 action plays since the start of last season.

In a 31-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints last week, Petty finished 21-for-48 (43.8 percent) with 193 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He was sacked once, posting a 44.9 passer rating.

“It’s difficult because you don’t have a lot of film to watch,” Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “But I’ve been impressed by his touch. It felt like against the Saints, it was more his first game starting — let’s get some quick, accurate throws — and then when they did take some shots, he was very accurate, had very good touch.

“So it feels like it’s a time when they might add a little bit more because they saw him make some of the throws and he’s gaining confidence. It will be interesting to see how much they expand, how much they open it up against us.”

Here are five things to watch for as the Chargers try to stay in the playoff hunt:

Get Melvin Gordon going: The Wisconsin product is 69 yards away from his first 1,000-yard rushing season. Last week against the Kansas City Chiefs, Gordon ran hard, totaling 169 yards from scrimmage. The Chargers need to get Gordon going early.

Take care of the football: After doing a good job of limiting turnovers during the second half of the season, the Chargers turned it over four times against the Chiefs, resulting in 13 points for Kansas City. So the Bolts have to do a better job of ball security and not give the Jets opportunities to stay in the game.

Execute in the kicking game: Nick Rose is the latest person brought in to add stability to the Chargers’ kicking game. The Chargers aren’t asking for a lot here: Just make some kicks inside 40 yards and boot a couple of kickoffs through the end zone.

Stop the run: The Jets will try to run the football in order to protect Petty, so the Chargers have to do a better job up front without the services of middle linebacker Denzel Perryman, who’s out with a hamstring injury. So Hayes Pullard, Jatavis Brown, Korey Toomer and the Bolts’ defensive line must be up to the task.

Create some chunk plays: The Jets have given up 27 passing touchdowns this year, tied for second worst in the NFL. And New York has allowed 53 passing plays of 20 yards or more, also second worst in the NFL. So the Chargers should have some opportunities to create big plays against the Jets’ defense.

Maybe Harrison Butker’s right leg was just tired.

After kicking five field goals, and booting kickoffs after all Chiefs scores Sunday, Butker came up short on a 46-yarder into a cold breeze in the fourth quarter on Sunday.

By then, the Chiefs had salted away a 29-13 triumph over the Miami Dolphins that secured a second consecutive AFC West title, a first for the organization. The kick would have been icing.

But it didn’t diminish the day or the personal accomplishment for Butker. The rookie, who was not obtained until after the third game this season, has gone on to one of the greatest seasons by a kicker in franchise history.

His five field goals Sunday, including a 49-yarder, pushed Butker’s season total to 36 and gave him two more than the previous record set by Nick Lowery in 1990.

That wasn’t all. Butker has made at least one field goal in all 12 games that he’s appeared, and that matches Lawrence Tynes’ 2005 mark for consecutive games with a field goal.

One more regular-season game remains, at Denver on Sunday, for Butker to own that mark outright.

His leg strength and accuracy have played a major role in the Chiefs’ three-game winning streak that halted a skid of six losses in seven games and returned them to the division championship path.

The Chiefs defeated the Raiders and Chargers before the Dolphins, and in those three games, Butker has 12 combined field goals. Add the points after touchdown and he has accounted for more than half — 43 — of the Chiefs’ 85 points in the streak.

cheap nfl jerseys usa

“I’ve gotten a lot of opportunities,” Butker said. “It’s like a kicker’s dream to get as many field goals as I’ve gotten.”

Or an offensive coordinator’s frustration. Sometimes the appearance of Butker has meant the Chiefs have bogged down on offense. Red-zone efficiency was poor on Sunday, with two touchdowns in seven trips inside the 20. That didn’t help a season-long red-zone touchdown rating of 45 percent, which ranked 28th entering the Dolphins game.

But at least the Chiefs know points have been all but a certainty once they’ve reached the 35 or so because of Butker.

Earlier this season, Butker set the team record for consecutive makes. After missing his first attempt in a Chiefs uniform, he was true on his next 23.

Against the Dolphins, fortune smiled on Butker. His final make went off the left upright.

“That was definitely the luckiest kick of my career,” Butker said. “I hit it and it was left. The contact wasn’t great. I knew the wind was blowing left to right, so I knew it had a chance. It saw I hit the post and the referee’s hands go up. I was very fortunate that kick went in.”
jersey shirts wholesale
Butker said the entire kicking operation should take a bow, from snapper James Winchester to holder Dustin Colquitt to a line that hasn’t allowed a kick to be blocked.

It’s been a near perfect season for the kicker who was drafted out of Georgia Tech by the Carolina Panthers earlier this year, lost the starting competition to incumbent Graham Gano and was signed off the practice squad by the Chiefs when starter Cairo Santos aggravated a groin injury in the third week.

The Chiefs had landed the player whose Twitter handle is @Buttkicker7.

Only the Rams’ Greg Zuerlein and the 49ers Robbie Gould have booted more field goals this season than Butker, who was chosen AFC special teams player of the month for October. He also was picked as a Pro Bowl alternate.

One regular-season game remains before Butker will confront the biggest stage of his young career. The Chiefs have clinched a playoff spot and the No. 4 seed, meaning they’ll play host to a Wild Card round game on Jan. 6 or 7.

So far, nothing has fazed him.

“I’ve put in a lot of work for this moment,” Butker said. “I’m glad it’s coming together.”

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott disputed Monday’s comments by Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly that Bills players did not adequately come to the defense of cornerback Tre’Davious White after he took an illegal hit Sunday from New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The NFL suspended Gronkowski one game for the hit. He will appeal the penalty, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Kelly told Buffalo radio station 97 Rock on Monday that it “surprised him” that Bills players “did not retaliate” for the fourth-quarter hit, which landed White in the concussion protocol and resulted in Gronkowski’s being flagged for unnecessary roughness.

“We had three guys standing there,” Kelly said. “When you see a shot like that — if I’m the coach, yeah, you want to play smart, you don’t want to play dirty, you don’t want to get that penalty and all that. But boy, when you see something like that, and it happens right in front of you — me as a quarterback, I might have ran over and gave him a good shot.

“Yeah, I might have got a penalty for it, too. But I remember back in the day … anytime anybody did something like — whether it was me or [former Bills running back] Thurman [Thomas] or anybody — we were right there. [Former Bills coach] Marv [Levy] always said, ‘Don’t play dumb, don’t play dirty.’ But the thing is, you want to come to the defense of your boys. I guess they didn’t want to get a penalty also.”

Gronkowski dove and drove his left arm into the back of White’s helmet as the rookie cornerback lay face-first on the ground to secure the ball after intercepting Tom Brady late in New England’s 23-3 win.

After the game, Gronkowski apologized for the hit and said it was fueled by frustration for what he felt should have been a defensive pass interference on the play by White. Bills safety Micah Hyde was among players calling Gronkowski’s hit “dirty” and expressing surprise that he was not ejected.

Gronkowski’s hit did not come without reaction from Buffalo. Safety Jordan Poyer shoved Gronkowski after he hit White, and linebacker Preston Brown and cornerback Lafayette Pitts stood near White and looked toward officials to throw a flag.

McDermott defended his players’ response to the play Monday.
wholesale nfl jerseys free shipping
“I know what I saw,” he said. “I’m also proud, to a point, of the poise that we showed. Because that’s important as we build this thing, that we’re doing things the right way. The referees handle things, and then we have to play within the rules.”

Former Bills safety Aaron Williams, who was fined for his role in a pregame altercation with the Patriots last season at Gillette Stadium, wrote on Twitter on Sunday that Bills players should have done more to retaliate against Gronkowski.

The flag against Gronkowski was one of four penalties on the play. Hyde and Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola were both called for unnecessary roughness for a separate altercation, and Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for his behavior toward officials. The Bills began their next drive with a first-and-25.

McDermott declined comment Monday when asked if he had been in contact with the NFL about the hit.

“We’ve moved on,” he said. “What’s gonna be is gonna be with that situation. With all due respect to all the questions. The more I answer questions about that situation, the longer it lingers — I’m just being honest with you — and the more it becomes a distraction. We have to focus on us and the Indianapolis Colts.”

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take the field against New England on Sunday, the AFC’s top playoff seed will be on the line. Ahead of that highly anticipated matchup, Yahoo Sports spoke to Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell about how Ryan Shazier’s injury has impacted the team, why the road to the Lombardi Trophy goes through Pittsburgh, and one of his off-field hobbies: Playing and starring in “Call of Duty: World War II.”

Yahoo Sports: The Steelers are in first place in the AFC. Should Pittsburgh be considered the favorite to win the Super Bowl? What does your game against New England mean for the rest of the season and playoffs?

Le’Veon Bell: I’m obviously going to say yeah, we should be the Super Bowl favorite and we have the talent to back it up. I think we haven’t been necessarily playing our wholesale nfl jerseys best football, but we’ve been getting the job done for the last eight weeks or so that we’ve won. It may not be pretty, we may not win by 25, 30 points or play a style everybody likes, but we find a way to get the job done.

I think us beating Baltimore [in Week 14] 39-38 really showed a lot because that’s a divisional rivalry, against a team that’s been playing really good football. Then you see a team like New England [during the same week] they played a division rival and they didn’t get the job done. Some people don’t like the way we win, but at the end of the day we are winning the games. So I’m confident and I think the rest of our team is too.

The Steelers haven’t lost since Week 5 against Jacksonville. What changed?

I definitely think [that was our season’s turning point]. I think after our loss to Jacksonville it really opened our eyes and we found ways to win each and every game. I think us losing the way we did, we didn’t play a great football game. Those guys they made us pay for it. Jacksonville is a great football team and we have to go out there and play better football. We really realized that after that game.

The Ryan Shazier injury was awful to see, everyone is praying for his recovery, but in a way has it given your season a special meaning?

cheap china nfl jerseys

We obviously want to play for him. We know he’s a guy who put everything on the line to try and get the job done. We want to go out there and win the Super Bowl for him. For him I know how tough it is to watch football and not be able to play right now, especially with the condition he’s in. As a team we are always reaching out to him, checking on him, making sure he’s OK and in good spirits and he has been.

How long have you been playing ‘Call of Duty’ for? How did you and Alejandro Villanueva get the opportunity to be in the game?
wholesale nfl jerseys outlet
I’ve been playing the franchise for as long as I can remember. Every year I always get the new game. I think they picked Al because of his background with the armed forces but with me it was more that they saw that I love the game so much. I used to post it on my social media, clips of sniping, getting a whole bunch of kills, so they knew I was interested. Me and Al both had different ways of getting on the game but here we are and we got to play a good part.

What was the hardest part for you during this new experience of being in a video game?

I think the toughest part for me personally was remembering the lines and learning how to be a sergeant, being that guy in charge. It’s not something I do every day, but trying to get into that mode and act that role was the toughest part. At the same time, I was able to be myself [when I wasn’t in the motion-capture suit]. I think the people there enjoyed me being there during the process.

Who else on the team plays? Who is the best among you guys?

Outside of me who’s the best player? We have a group chat for the guys that play ‘Call of Duty’ and we send out a text to see who’s online and usually seven or eight guys respond. We do it every day. Martavis plays, Roosevelt Nix plays a lot, Jesse James, Vance McDonald. Al [Villanueva], because he’s actually been in war, sometimes I have to tell him it’s not real. He doesn’t think he can die but it’s a just a game, he takes it so serious.

Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly, who suffered a concussion in the first half of last Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, is not expected to be available this Sunday, when the Colts travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars.

Head coach Chuck Pagano said Kelly was still feeling concussion symptoms Wednesday, meaning even if he felt no symptoms by Thursday, he likely wouldn’t have enough days left in the league’s concussion protocol to be cleared by Sunday’s game.

“You know, to be quite frank with you, and to be honest with you, you get concussed on a Sunday and you’re still symptomatic on a Monday or a Tuesday and Wednesday, there’s not enough days, correct?” Pagano said when asked if he felt Kelly might be able to play against the Jaguars. “So I have zero confidence.”

Pagano said seventh-year veteran Mike Person would get the start in Kelly’s place if he is unable to go on Sunday. Person has played in all seven games since signing with the Colts on Oct. 3, though mostly in a special teams role.

Person, who filled in last Sunday for Kelly against the Titans, also played the entire second half of the Colts’ Week 7 game against the Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium after Kelly went out with a hamstring injury.

“It sucks about Ryan, but I’m going to take it with both hands and run with it,” Person said Wednesday. “(I’ll) just go out there and play football as fast as I can, and try to help everybody get on the same page.”

Person, who has played every position along the offensive line in his time with the Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams, Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs, said nothing will change in his approach as he prepares for his first NFL start since the 2015 season, when he started 14 games for the Falcons.

“I mean, you have to approach every week like you’re going to play,” he said. “So your preparation shouldn’t change just because you’re starting this week. It should be consistent the entire time.”

• Pagano also said Wednesday that cornerback Rashaan Melvin is “week-to-week” with a hand injury suffered during an interception of quarterback Marcus Mariota in last Sunday’s game against the Titans. The injury won’t require surgery, Pagano said, and Melvin, who will likely be wearing a club-like cast, could be back in the lineup as soon as next week, when the Colts travel to take on the Buffalo Bills.

• Tight end Erik Swoope, it turns out, will not be moved from Injured Reserve to the active roster after all. Swoope, who underwent a knee scope during training camp, began practicing earlier this month with the hope that the team could use one of its two return-from-IR designations on him, but Pagano said Wednesday Swoope was “close,” but facing a deadline to make a decision on whether or not to activate him, “he just didn’t make the progress that we thought he was going to make.” Swoope will be reverted to IR for the remainder of the season.

Here were some other interesting remarks made during Wednesday’s media availability:
wholesale cheap jerseys china review
• “To be honest, it’s guys playing together, starting to learn each other and whatnot. Obviously, there are a lot of different pieces that got put in and a lot of guys coming into a new scheme and whatnot, so it takes time to mesh. A lot longer than we would have liked, but at the end of the day, we do see ourselves getting better each and every week. But it’s important to get better from last week, because obviously last week wasn’t good enough.” — Colts inside linebacker Jon Bostic, on what has went into the Colts’ defensive improvement in the past month.

• “The correct read is always better than the incorrect read so I’ll try to do my best at doing that.” — Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett, on the importance of making the “correct reads” against a talented secondary like Jacksonville’s (and said with a laugh).

• “It’s tough. It’s tough, but I know what type of guys we’ve got in this locker room – great group of guys who will come to work every day. I know things haven’t been going our way, and I think if we just handle the small things, I think that can change. We’ve just got to go out there and play on Sunday.” — Colts running back Frank Gore, on how tough the season has been so far for the team and him.

Dak Prescott is battling through the worse stretch of play in his football career.

With the Dallas Cowboys now 5-6 on the heels of a third straight blowout loss, their fourth of the season, there’s a list of issues to point the finger at, from players to coaches and even NFL officiating itself — the latter being a story for another time. One of the more talented teams in the league, this is a team coming off of a historic 13-3 season and now face being eliminated from the playoffs before ever making it there.

And that’s a tough pill to swallow for Prescott.

“It’s frustrating, it’s shocking,” he said, via The Dallas Morning News. “You look around and you see the Pro Bowlers and the talent that you have, it’s almost lost at words for why it’s happening. But it just shows you this game’s tough.”

**Follow @VoiceOfTheStar on Twitter for up-to-the-second news and analysis!**

That it most certainly is, but it doesn’t explain away the lack of adjustments being made throughout the game. The Cowboys have been in position to flip five of their six losses to wins, but are routinely being obliterated in the second half. They’ve been within seven points or less at the half on four separate occasions, and had the lead in yet another.

This leaves many to justifiably question the coaching staff as a whole, and not simply head coach Jason Garrett.

“Look into it deeper,” Prescott said, via The Dallas Morning News. “You must not know much if you just point fingers at the coaching staff or point fingers at anybody, really. Then you don’t know enough. Just look into it more.”

Okay then, let’s.

Another major problem is the Cowboys’ defense continues to be porous, allowing opponents to rack up points and turn them into a one-dimensional team. This creates a cycle of over-dependency on Prescott and the struggling wideouts, who routinely stall on drives and seem to be lacking chemistry as of late.

What’s worse is just how embarrassing the offense has been, albeit with the 2016 Rookie of the Year leading the way. In the Cowboys three-straight blowout losses, Prescott has delivered only 500 passing yards to go along with no touchdowns and five interceptions. For perspective, Phillip Rivers finished Thursday’s game with 434 yards — which amounts to 86% of Prescott’s total pass production over his last 12 quarters of football.

While the loss to the Falcons certainly was not his fault, the same can’t be said for the past two outings. A bad situation there is dragged further into the abyss by the wide receivers’ inability to make the big play in the rare instance they have the opportunity to. One need look no further than the dropped touchdown by Dez Bryant against the Chargers to see it, as that would’ve put the Cowboys within nine points with nearly eight minutes remaining.

Prescott would drop back two plays later and deliver a pick six, putting the Chargers up 22 points and they’d never look back.

“I look in the mirror and I look at the other guys in the play,” Prescott said. “Simply explosion plays, I don’t know if you could point at a coach, it’s just us, making guys miss and wanting to go get those extra yards. That’s just simply about the athleticism of our playmakers and making guys miss.”

It’s certainly admirable (and expected) Prescott would fall on the sword here, and while he’s also accountable for the losses as of late — there’s no denying it’s deeper than that. From QB play to wide receiver drops to lack of coaching adjustments to failure to acknowledge a five billion year old sun, everything is and should be up for discussion.

Including the 33 consecutive quarters without the opposing team being called for a holding penalty. Despite those realities, however, Prescott will hear none of it. For him, it’s as simple as figuring out how to revert back to 2016 form.

“Nothing’s changed,” Prescott noted, via The Dallas Morning News.”We’re the same team, we’ve got the same players out there, so it’s just about just getting back to that.”

That’s not entirely true though, considering the absence of running back Ezekiel Elliott.

“I walked into that didn’t I?” replied the second-year QB when reminded of that important tidbit.

In the absence of Elliott, the team has floundered at every attempt to get into the end zone. Their continued ineptitude has officially garnered them a franchise record they’d rather not have, having now going 10 straight quarters without scoring a single touchdown. It’s also the first time in the team’s history they’ve scored less than 10 points in three-straight games, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

And the void left by linebacker Sean Lee has also not been filled, the Cowboys now hoisting an 0-4 record in his absence due to injury — allowing 32.4 points per game without him, to only 18 points per game when he’s suited and booted. The secondary is also noticeably younger following the free agency spree of 2017, that saw three starting defensive backs and one backup take their leave.

This has forced players like corner back Anthony Brown to take a full-time role as starter, but his sophomore slump has been a sizable liability for the team. Now entering Week 13 and facing a January-less season, the Cowboys have decided enough is enough — opening up the possibility of benching Brown and moving pieces around to help salve the defensive bleeding.

“The coaches have done a good job in taking the last couple days and re-evaluating what they’re doing from a coaching standpoint,” said center Travis Frederick, via The Dallas Morning News. “And encouraged us as players to take a good look at what we’re doing, and how we can better improve our individual games. …It was a clear message.”

Prescott has a message of his own, and it’s aimed at those he feel are doubting his ability to bounce back from career-worst outings.

“Keep questioning me,” Prescott said. “Obviously, if you’re questioning me, you don’t know me and you don’t know what I’m about. So, keep questioning me.

“Have fun.”

It was sometime late in the third quarter when a moment of truth arrived for Derek Carr and his Oakland Raiders, who were getting their hats handed to them while having their lunch money taken by the New England Patriots.

The Patriots also had stolen the Raiders’ crowd at mammoth Estadio Azteca on Sunday.

“I stood in that huddle, down 30, with my guys, everyone hurting, everyone mad, and we looked at each other,” Carr said breathlessly after the Raiders lost 33-8 to fall to 4-6 on the season.wholesale china jersey

“Nothing changes for us. We are who we are, and we’re not going to turn on each other, we’re not going to turn on anything about what we do. Obviously, we know that our culture, and everything that we do, works because we’ve seen it work. Mailing it in and those type of things, that will never happen. Not as long as I’m here.”

Carr, who signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension with Oakland last summer, perhaps had one eye on the schedule.

Entering the season, the Raiders had the fourth-toughest schedule in the NFL, with the other three also residing in the AFC West. But here is where it gets relatively soft. The key word being “relatively,” of course.

Consider: The Raiders are in dire need of some home cooking, as they have not played in Oakland since their thrilling 31-30 defeat of the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 19. Games in Buffalo and Miami preceded a bye before this “home” game in Mexico City.

The next two games are in Oakland, against the Denver Broncos, who are 3-7, and the New York Giants, who are 2-8. Of course, the Broncos already beat the Raiders, 16-10, on Oct. 1, when Carr suffered broken bones in his back. And the Giants just upset the Chiefs.

Plus, the Raiders are only one game out of the second AFC wild-card spot.

Win these next two games, at home, and the Raiders remain in the thick of things and could potentially make a serious run.

But are we simply whistling past the graveyard here? Have the Raiders already checked out on an extremely disappointing and underachieving season after going 12-4 last year?

The offense has not sustained the firepower it showed in 2016, and the defense, well, it has been wracked by injuries and ineffectiveness.

Against the Patriots, the Raiders looked like anything but a contender to New England’s crown, as they were purported to be this offseason.

Tom Brady carved up Oakland’s depleted secondary — second-round draft pick Obi Melifonwu, a safety by trade, started at left cornerback and had a rough go of it — to the tune of 339 yards passing, with three touchdowns and a 131.9 passer rating.

“You know, [Oakland] does quite a few things with their front and the coverage,” said Brady, who was sacked once by Khalil Mack. “We talked all week about just being prepared for how they were going to play the game, and the tempo helped us out early. I think it settled some things in. We got down the field and scored on the first drive, which was good.

“[The Raiders] play hard. They’ve got a good rush. I thought we found some spots in the zones.”

On their opening drive, the Patriots went no-huddle and gassed the Raiders’ defense with an 87-yard touchdown drive in 15 plays.

“We had a rough day,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said after the Patriots compiled 420 total yards and cashed in five of their first six third-down conversions.

“Couldn’t get them slowed down enough and couldn’t get ourselves going. Tough loss.”

So how does Del Rio maintain order and keep his players focused without checking out?

“To me, I don’t give any credence to those kinds of questions,” he said. “I mean, no offense, but I — to me, it’s we’re professionals and, to me, so long as you have hope, you keep your hope, you keep hope alive.

“So we’ll continue to scratch and claw and fight for everything we can.”
